Cross section
Such fracture zones were formed many millions of years ago when the Alps developed. The second part followed a few ridiculous thousand years ago. When the Gamsbach stream cut its bed into the rock, it met the fracture zone. This now no longer lay protected inside the mountain. The fissures along the fissures had always carried water, but now they lay in the open and it freezes there in winter. Piece by piece, the ice is therefore blasting out of the rock. Along the fracture zone, this is how the deep crevasse was formed. The blasting of rocks is of great importance because it contributes to the formation of soil. Between the small pieces, the roots of plants have a foothold and can extract food and water from the soil. If a plant dies, it contributes to the increase of humus in the soil. In this way, so much soil has already formed in our crevices that large trees can grow.
