Are there thermal waters in the GeoVillage?

In principle, the heating of the water works like in an instantaneous water heater. Cold water reaches the depths through fissures. There it meets gypsum. Bacteria heat it and it absorbs sulphur. Again, it is pressed to the surface through fissures. They wouldn’t have much fun with this flow heater, because it takes up to 400 years for the water to come to the surface again. The fact that it is not quite as warm – as would be desirable – is precisely because it mixes with cold water before it emerges at the source. Depending on the amount of cold water, the temperature therefore varies between 8 and 19°. The water is nevertheless used in the outdoor pool. A heat pump makes it possible for visitors to feel comfortable at temperatures of 24°.

As early as 1811, Franz Sartori mentioned the Noth sulphur spring under natural-historical curiosities. During later development work in the spring area on the banks of the Gamsbach, remains of wooden vats were found, suggesting that bathing was also practised on the spot very early on. Records from later years show that the hydrogen sulphide spring came out at a temperature of 16 to 25 degrees C, but unfortunately it was not possible at the time to purify the spring, which mixed with the secondary water of the Gamsbach.

At the beginning of the 1970s, Hermann Lußmann, then head of tourism, once again drew attention to the spring, and boron tests were carried out from a depth of 30 to 110 metres. But these extensive techniques did not lead to the desired success. So it was decided to at least capture the spring discharges in the best possible way and to channel them to the open-air swimming pool.

Conclusion of an observation period of one and a half centuries: a subtherme exists, it stinks to high heaven at times, the stream is still ice-free, only the pure spring could not be captured so far despite all efforts.

In addition to the Parkbad Gams, we recommend the outdoor pool in Hieflau and the bathing lake in Mooslandl in the municipality of Landl: badesee-landl.at
